Tim Hillwood's Venture Out album– born from the blow of a fall.
True Story- Years ago at the age of 36 I was painting a house from a walk-board at the second story and it came crashing down- with me on it.
I passed out from the impact, landing on a narrow strip of lawn between some railroad ties and round patio rocks.
Some time later on my back, I regained consciousness and found myself looking face up at a half dozen or so emergency personnel standing over my battered body in the mid-summer sky.
"Don't move him." I heard one of the medics say. "He could have internal bleeding or a broken back." In surprising matter-of-fact tone I shifted my body some and reported that my back was OK but it was just about then I glanced toward my twisted left hand. (scroll down)
Three of my fingers that used to play guitar at an advanced level were pushed backwards, and that left playing hand now looked strangely disfigured.
The next thing I remember, I was in a hospital half out-of-it with pain medication and a doctor manipulating my strayed fingers back In their respective joints. "Back In Place" would later become the final lively track of Venture Out, a mostly instrumental acoustic guitar music CD —music which came close to being lost.
There's more to tell . . .like the doctor's uncertainty about my chances of becoming a guitarist again, or the long year and a half of painful, often discouraging practice. I went from broken fingers that could barely make a note, to breaking limits of previous barriers. Going through that fire brought new compositions and new possibilities to life.
This Venture Out album was recorded as a personal triumph. It's also a musical reminder that I hope inspires others to overcome challenges or create a compelling path.
There is power in making a CHOICE outside of what looks to be the predictable future.
